Liu Biao’s seat. Zhuge Liang farmed and Liu Bei lived as a guest near here, not at Jiangling. Guan Yu later attacked Fan, across the river from Xiangyang.

The frame is historical. Character, dialogue, and scale are often rewritten by the novel.

Xiangyang stands on the south bank of the Han. Fan is on the north bank. Liu Biao’s government sat here, so for much of Jian’an “Jingzhou” means Xiangyang, not the Jiangling now called Jingzhou city.

When Cao Cao came south, Liu Cong decided to surrender here. Liu Bei’s retreat passed Dangyang and became Changban. In 219 Guan Yu came up from Jiangling, besieged Fan, and flooded seven armies. The novel also sets the three visits in this country. The exact village of Longzhong is disputed. The direction is west of Xiangyang, not Chengdu.
