After Liu Biao died and Liu Cong surrendered, Liu Bei retreated south from the Xiangyang country with people and soldiers. Cao Cao’s riders caught him at Changban. He abandoned his family. The novel adds Xu Shu’s mother. The flight is historical.

Zhao Yun brought Lady Gan and Liu Shan out. Zhang Fei held the bridge with twenty riders. Both are in the Records, briefly. The novel counts seven charges and a shout that snaps the bridge. Changban is the defeat before Red Cliffs, not a victory.
