Records of the Three Kingdoms

Pang Tong, courtesy name Shiyuan, was from Xiangyang. Sima Hui called him the crown of the southern gentlemen. People called him the Fledgling Phoenix. After Zhou Yu’s death he escorted the funeral to Jiangdong, then joined Liu Bei. Liu Bei at first made him only magistrate of Leiyang. Later he valued him as he valued Zhuge Liang and named him an army-libationer in the counselor’s rank.

With Fa Zheng he helped Liu Bei decide to enter Shu. In 214, attacking Liu Zhang, he was besieging Luo when a flying arrow killed him. He was thirty-six. Liu Bei grieved.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel has him offer Cao Cao the chained-ships plan at Red Cliffs, locking the boats so the fire can work. The Pang Tong of the histories did not plan that battle on the river.

The Slope of the Fallen Phoenix is the place the book gives him to die: he exchanges horses with Liu Bei and rides into an ambush. The couplet about sparing Lu Su at the pass and sighing for Zhou Yu on the river is a storyteller’s tag, not a sentence of the histories.
