Records of the Three Kingdoms

Zhou Tai, courtesy name Youping, was from Xiacai in Jiujiang. With Jiang Qin he followed Sun Ce, and he was then assigned to guard Sun Quan. When Sun Ce left Sun Quan to manage affairs at Xuancheng, hill people attacked without warning and the guards froze. Zhou Tai put himself behind Sun Quan, took twelve wounds, and nearly died that day. He lived because others nursed him.

He fought afterward at Ruxu and Hefei. At a banquet Sun Quan had him open his clothes, drank to each scar, and gave him an imperial canopy. The biography does not record the year of his death.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel makes the Xuancheng rescue specific: raiders at night, Zhou Tai cutting a way out, then collapsing. Dong Xi and others stand nearby. The later banquet, with Sun Quan drinking to the scars, is kept as a picture of a ruler who does not forget.

The book also has Zhou Tai cover Sun Quan in a river fight. The scars are his mark.
