Records of the Three Kingdoms

Ding Feng, courtesy name Chengyuan, was from Anfeng in Lujiang. He rose from a junior command, spoke little, and was decisive in a fight. In 252 Wei officers including Zhuge Dan and Hu Zun attacked Dongxing. Ding Feng told the other generals they should strike at once, led three thousand of his own men, dropped armor in the snow, and went up the dike with short weapons. The Wei vanguard broke. The battle pulled Wu out of danger, and Zhuge Ke’s reputation rose with it.

While Sun Chen held power, Ding Feng seemed to go along. In 258 he joined Sun Xiu’s plot and struck at the winter-sacrifice banquet. Sun Chen was killed. He was still a general under Sun Hao and died of illness in 271. Few Wu officers served from Sun Quan’s lifetime into the early years of Sun Hao.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel’s Dongxing gives Ding Feng his brightest fight: armor thrown off in the snow, short blades first up the dike, the Wei vanguard in disorder.

Later he stands with Sun Xiu in the killing of Sun Chen. Under Sun Hao he is still alive, but the scenes pass to Lu Kang and to Jin’s march south.
