Records of the Three Kingdoms
Dong Zhuo, courtesy name Zhongying, was from Lintao in Longxi. He commanded Liangzhou troops in the northwest for years. In 189 He Jin and the eunuchs destroyed each other, and He Jin had secretly called Dong Zhuo to the capital. When Dong Zhuo arrived, He Jin was already dead and the guards had scattered. Dong Zhuo absorbed the remnants and became the strongest force in the city.
He deposed the young emperor Liu Bian and enthroned Liu Xie, Prince of Chenliu, who became Emperor Xian. The eastern provinces rose against him. Unable to win in the east, in 190 he moved the capital to Chang’an, drove the people of Luoyang west, burned the palaces, and dug up the tombs. Luoyang was left waste.
In Chang’an he made himself grand preceptor. In the fourth month of 192 Wang Yun, Shi Sunrui, and Lü Bu had him stabbed as he entered court. His officers Li Jue and Guo Si then took Chang’an and killed Wang Yun.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The novel adds the pressure of the warming wine: Hua Xiong kills several officers at Sishui Pass, and Guan Yu rides out. In the histories Hua Xiong dies in Sun Jian’s victory, not by Guan Yu.
The chained plots and Diaochan are also the novel. The deposition, the move of the capital, the burning of Luoyang, and Dong Zhuo’s death at Lü Bu’s hand follow the order of the histories.
