Records of the Three Kingdoms

Chen Shou wrote no life of a woman named Diaochan. Lü Bu’s biography says that one reason Lü Bu broke with Dong Zhuo was an affair with one of Dong Zhuo’s maids, which left him afraid. The maid is not named.

Minister Wang Yun joined with Lü Bu, and in the fourth month of 192 Dong Zhuo was stabbed. Wang Yun was a chief plotter. That is history. The histories do not say Wang Yun promised a woman to Lü Bu and then presented her to Dong Zhuo.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The name Diaochan and the chained plots come to maturity in Song and Yuan storytelling and in the Romance. In the novel she is a singing girl in Wang Yun’s household and enters the plan of her own will. Wang Yun promises her to Lü Bu and then gives her to Dong Zhuo. At the Phoenix Pavilion the two men turn on each other.

She later goes with Lü Bu to Xiapi. After the White Gate Tower, editions differ about what becomes of her. The usual Mao text does not keep her as a protagonist of the later chapters. This page belongs to the Romance.
