Records of the Three Kingdoms
Wang Yun, courtesy name Zishi, was from Qi in Taiyuan. Under Emperor Xian he rose to minister over the masses and was one of the chief plotters against Dong Zhuo. In the fourth month of 192 he, Shi Sunrui, and Lü Bu arranged the blow as Dong Zhuo entered court. Lü Bu stabbed Dong Zhuo. When the news spread, gentlemen and commoners in Chang’an were said to celebrate.
Wang Yun then ran the court and would not pardon Dong Zhuo’s old Liangzhou officers. On Jia Xu’s advice Li Jue and Guo Si gathered the army and attacked Chang’an. When the city fell Wang Yun was killed, at fifty-six. His family suffered with him. Killing Dong Zhuo was his success. Failing to settle Dong Zhuo’s army was his failure.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The novel gives Wang Yun a singing girl, Diaochan, in his household. He promises her to Lü Bu and then presents her to Dong Zhuo. The chain of plots sets the two against each other. The Phoenix Pavilion is the height of the scheme. After Dong Zhuo’s death the book still has Wang Yun refuse pardon to the Liangzhou troops. Li Jue and Guo Si take Chang’an, and Wang Yun dies on the wall or in the city.
Diaochan and the chained plots are not in the Records. That Wang Yun led the killing of Dong Zhuo and then died at Li Jue’s hands is history.
