Records of the Three Kingdoms
Zhuge Ke, courtesy name Yuanxun, was Zhuge Jin’s eldest son. He could argue from childhood. When Sun Quan joked in public about his father’s long face, the boy answered at once, and Sun Quan liked him the more. Zhuge Jin thought the edge was too sharp to keep a family safe.
Sun Quan left him the regency. In 252 Ding Feng and others under his overall command defeated Wei at Dongxing, and his reputation peaked. He then raised a great levy and besieged Xincheng at Hefei. The city held. Disease ran through the army. He would not retreat. After the withdrawal resentment was heavy. In the winter of 253 the imperial kinsman Sun Jun gave a banquet, killed Zhuge Ke there, and exterminated the three clans. The worry Lu Xun and Zhuge Jin had shown about the younger generation came due in a brutal form.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The novel makes him brilliant and unable to lose. After Dongxing he is past advice. At Hefei he spends Wu’s army. Sun Jun and the court remove him at a feast. The frame matches the histories; the speeches are thicker.
The book also sets his death beside his uncle’s: Zhuge Liang dies in camp, Zhuge Ke under the knives of his own side.
