Lü Fan, courtesy name Ziheng, was from Xiyang in Runan. He met Sun Ce at Shouchun, put his own wealth into the Sun cause, and then for years ran the army’s accounts. When Sun Ce tried to take goods from the store for private use, Lü Fan refused. Sun Ce trusted him more for it.

Under Sun Quan he campaigned with Zhou Yu and Cheng Pu and also held a command toward Ruxu. In 228 he was named grand marshal and died of illness before the seal arrived. The biography says he was personally frugal and publicly exact.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel almost never shows Lü Fan with the books. His name sometimes appears among Sun Ce’s or Sun Quan’s attendants, without a plot of its own. The histories treat him as Jiangdong’s steward. The novel gives that kind of part to advisers who make speeches.
