Records of the Three Kingdoms

Zhou Yu’s biography in the Records says that when Sun Ce attacked Wan he gained the two daughters of Master Qiao, both celebrated beauties. Sun Ce married the elder, Zhou Yu the younger. The surname is Qiao in later fiction; the histories write the related character Qiao/Qiao.

Chen Shou gives her no further deeds, no personal name, and no reliable dates or children. She was Sun Ce’s wife. Sun Ce died in 200. What she did after that is not in the histories.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel keeps the praise of their looks and makes Da Qiao Sun Ce’s wife, paired with Xiao Qiao as a legend of Jiangdong. In the speeches before Red Cliffs, Zhuge Liang says Cao Cao wants the two Qiaos for the Bronze Bird Terrace, in order to anger Wu. That is a novelist’s rhetoric, not a document of Cao Cao’s.

Da Qiao herself rarely acts. She sets off Sun Ce’s early glory, and she completes the pair of names.
