Records of the Three Kingdoms
Xiao Qiao was the younger daughter of Master Qiao of Lujiang. In 199, after Sun Ce took Wan, Zhou Yu married her. The only passage is in Zhou Yu’s biography in the Records. She has no biography of her own. Dates, a personal name, and whether she ever went with Zhou Yu to Baqiu are not recorded.
Zhou Yu died in 210. Chen Shou does not say what became of her.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel she is Zhou Yu’s wife, and her beauty is pulled into the mood of Red Cliffs. Zhuge Liang tells Zhou Yu that Cao Cao is coming south for the two Qiaos, and he recites lines from the Bronze Bird Terrace rhapsody that he has altered. Zhou Yu then commits to war. The rhapsody does not say that. The provocation is the novel’s.
Xiao Qiao herself still rarely speaks. Later opera gives her plots of her own. This page stays with where the Romance places her.
