Records of the Three Kingdoms

Zhuge Liang’s biography in the Records does not say what his wife was called. Pei Songzhi quotes the Xiangyang ji. Huang Chengyan told Zhuge Liang that he had a daughter, yellow-haired and dark-faced, whose ability was a match. Zhuge Liang accepted. People at the time joked about it. The note says a woman of the Huang family. It does not use the name Yueying, and it does not say she invented the wooden ox or taught a battle formation.

Huang Chengyan was a noted man of Xiangyang, connected with the local gentry. Beyond that, the histories do not give her dates or say whether she went with Zhuge Liang into Shu.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel and later lore call her Huang Yueying and make her a woman whose learning exceeds her looks. Some versions have her help Zhuge Liang with machines and books while he is away. Those scenes are not in Chen Shou, and they are not in Pei’s short note.

The novel wants a spouse who matches the Sleeping Dragon, so “her ability is a match” becomes a character. This page uses the later name Huang Yueying because that is the name readers search.
