Records of the Three Kingdoms
Ju Shou was from Guangping. While Yuan Shao took the north he supervised the army. He proposed welcoming Emperor Xian. Yuan Shao did not carry it through. Before the march on Cao Cao, he and Tian Feng wanted a long war. Guo Tu and Shen Pei wanted a quick one. Yuan Shao divided Ju Shou’s command.
During the standoff at Guandu he again told Yuan Shao not to cross and seek a decision at once, and he reinforced the case with talk of the stars. Those speeches are in the Xiandi zhuan, quoted by Pei. After Cao Cao’s night attack on Wuchao succeeded, Yuan’s army broke and Ju Shou was captured. In the camp he shouted that he would escape in the dark. Cao Cao liked his ability and still had him killed because he would not submit.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel Ju Shou and Tian Feng advise Yuan Shao together and are refused together. After capture he steals a horse and rides north. Cao Cao’s pursuers shoot him on the road.
The book makes his loyalty to the Yuans plain. The stars and the slow plan both go into the council before Guandu.
