Records of the Three Kingdoms

Shen Pei, courtesy name Zhengnan, was from Wei commandery. In Yuan Shao’s camp he handled supply and military law. He was hard, and he did not get along with Guo Tu and Xin Ping. At Guandu he was on the side that wanted battle. After Yuan Shao’s death, Shen Pei and Pang Ji backed the younger son Yuan Shang. Xin Ping and Guo Tu backed the elder, Yuan Tan. The north split.

In 204 Cao Cao besieged Ye. Shen Pei held it for months. His nephew Shen Rong opened the east gate. Shen Pei was captured and still stood facing the direction of the Yuan house. He would not kneel to Cao Cao. Cao Cao killed him. Chen Shou gave him no biography of his own. The deeds are in Yuan Shao’s life and in the annals of Cao Cao.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel’s Shen Pei holds Ye until the wells inside the city show the siege has reached the groundwater, and he still does not surrender. Captured, he curses Xin Pi and will not bend. Cao Cao kills him and still regrets the talent.

The book sets him with Chen Lin’s denunciation and Ju Shou’s flight in one picture of the Yuan house ending.
