Records of the Three Kingdoms

Cheng Pu, courtesy name Demou, was from Tuyin in Youbeiping. He followed Sun Jian against the Yellow Turbans and Dong Zhuo, then Sun Ce in the conquest of Jiangdong. Few officers had a longer record with the family. Under Sun Quan he was still in the field.

At Red Cliffs, Sun Quan made Zhou Yu and Cheng Pu the left and right commanders. With Liu Bei they defeated Cao Cao at Red Cliffs and Wulin. The biography says Cheng Pu, being older, at first slighted Zhou Yu. After he saw how Zhou Yu ran the army he changed his mind, and told others that dealing with Zhou Yu was like drinking strong, mellow wine. The biography does not date his death.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In the novel Cheng Pu is the senior officer before Red Cliffs, with fewer scenes than Zhou Yu or Huang Gai. The joint command remains. He mostly stands at the edge of the decision.

The book does not tell how he came to respect Zhou Yu. The fire attack gives the lines to Huang Gai and Zhuge Liang.
