Records of the Three Kingdoms
Yue Jin, courtesy name Wenqian, was from Weiguo in Yangping. He was short, exceptionally bold, and followed Cao Cao from the early campaigns, often first up a wall. Around Guandu he broke enemy camps more than once. Later he stood with Yu Jin and Zhang Liao among the named generals whose service Cao Cao cited.
In 215 he held Hefei with Zhang Liao and Li Dian. Under Cao Cao’s prior order he was the one to keep the city. He died of illness in 218. Chen Shou placed him in one chapter with Zhang Liao, Yu Jin, Zhang He, and Xu Huang. Later readers called them the five elite generals. That label is a later grouping, not a roster Cao Cao published.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The novel adopts the five elite generals and gives Yue Jin a spear, usually beside Li Dian and Yu Jin. At Hefei he has fewer lines than Zhang Liao.
He dies before Guan Yu’s northern campaign, so he is not in the seven armies drowned at Fan. The novel mostly keeps that timing.
