Records of the Three Kingdoms
Li Dian, courtesy name Mancheng, was from Juye in Shanyang. His uncle Li Qian brought several thousand households of the clan over to Cao Cao at the beginning. After Li Qian’s death the clan stayed. Li Dian preferred study, treated scholars with respect, and did not fight the other generals for credit. Cao Cao praised him for that.
In 215 Sun Quan besieged Hefei. Zhang Liao wanted to go out. Li Dian, who did not get along with him, was silent at first, then said this was the state’s business and he would follow Zhang Liao’s orders. The two left the city together and struck the Wu army. The biography says Li Dian died of illness at thirty-six. It does not pin the death to a single Common Era year. Because he fought at Hefei, the death cannot sit before that campaign.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel Li Dian and Zhang Liao have a private grudge. On the eve of Hefei, Li Dian sets it aside and goes out with him. That turn is written into the night before the defense.
He is usually named beside Yue Jin and has few lines. The book does not make him the subject of a chapter.
