Records of the Three Kingdoms

Wen Chou and Yan Liang were both famous officers in Yuan Shao’s army. After Yan Liang’s death at Baima, Yuan Shao crossed the river himself and sent Liu Bei and Wen Chou to challenge. At Yanjin, Cao Cao used baggage to draw the Yuan soldiers into looting, then struck with cavalry. The annals of Emperor Wu say the army was broken and Wen Chou was killed. They do not say Guan Yu killed him. Wen Chou, like Yan Liang, has no biography.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel sends Wen Chou to avenge Yan Liang. At Yanjin he fights Guan Yu and Zhang Liao. In the confusion Guan Yu cuts him down. Both Yan Liang and Wen Chou die by Guan Yu’s hand. The book gathers two victories into one man’s martial credit.

The histories only assure that Wen Chou died in that pursuit. Whose blade it was, the main text does not say.
