Records of the Three Kingdoms

Jiang Wei, courtesy name Boyue, was from Ji in Tianshui. He was a Wei officer. In 228, when Zhuge Liang came out at Qishan, Jiang Wei and Liang Xu went over to Shu. Zhuge Liang said Jiang Wei’s heart was with Han and that he was quick at war.

After the Yanxi reign he marched into Longxi again and again, with victories and heavy defeats. While Fei Yi lived, the number of troops given to Jiang Wei was limited. In 263 Zhong Hui attacked Jian’ge and Jiang Wei held the main force. Deng Ai reached Chengdu from Yinping, and Liu Shan surrendered. Jiang Wei, under orders, surrendered to Zhong Hui, then tried to use Zhong Hui’s ambition to kill the Wei officers and restore Shu. Zhong Hui failed. Jiang Wei and his wife were killed.

Chen Shou says he had a rough competence in civil and military matters and a will to make a name, and that he wore the army out and was not fully clear in judgment.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The nine campaigns against the heartland are the novel’s round number for years of marching. The histories do not need to be counted to nine.

The book has him feign surrender to Zhong Hui and, when the plot fails, cut his own throat, still hoping to restore the state. Zhuge Liang passing the lamp, and all he had learned, is the novel’s line of teaching.
