Records of the Three Kingdoms
Han Sui, courtesy name Wenyue, was from Jincheng. He rose early in Liang Province. He and Ma Teng attacked each other and also swore brotherhood under different surnames. In 211 he, Ma Chao, and other contingents held Tong Pass, and Cao Cao came west. Cao Cao used an old acquaintance with Han Sui, spoke with him alone in front of the lines, and laughed about the old days in the capital. Ma Chao became suspicious. Cao Cao also altered a letter of Han Sui’s. The split worked, and the alliance broke.
Han Sui fell back west of Jincheng. Around Cao Cao’s campaign against Zhang Lu in 215, Han Sui’s officers Qu Yan and Jiang Shi killed him and sent the head to Cao Cao. He died later than Ma Teng, and he never entered Shu.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The novel makes the talk in front of the lines a staged play: Cao Cao speaks only of household matters with Han Sui, and Ma Chao nearly charges. A letter smeared with alterations then drives Ma Chao to cut Han Sui’s hand.
Han Sui’s death at the hands of his own men is shorter in the book. The beard cut off and the robe thrown away belong to Cao Cao and Ma Chao. Han Sui is the man inside the split.
