The winter after Jieting, Zhuge Liang came out by Sanguan and besieged Chencang. Hao Zhao held it with a small garrison. Cloud ladders and rams were stopped. After twenty days the grain failed and Shu withdrew. Wang Shuang pursued and was killed.
The phrase “six campaigns from Qishan” hides this siege. Zhuge Liang tried again at once. The failure was a wall and supply, not Ma Su repeating an error. Hao Zhao is firmer in the Records than in the novel.
