Borrowing the East Wind

Romance

Zhuge Liang prays on an altar and a southeast wind rises so Huang Gai can launch. A winter wind becomes a spell. The Records only have a wind on the day of the fire.

This entry follows the Romance and later storytelling. The Records do not contain it, or keep only a faint parallel.

The fire attack needed an east or southeast wind to blow toward Cao Cao’s fleet. That is weather and geography. The biographies of Huang Gai and Zhou Yu do not make the wind something a person summoned.

The novel has Zhuge Liang build an altar and grasp a sword, and Zhou Yu grows more jealous. Borrowing the wind turns a meteorological condition into personal power. It explains why the novel stages a duel inside the alliance. It is not the weather file for 208.
