Dynasty Warriors began in 1997 at Koei, later Koei Tecmo. The player takes one officer and cuts through crowds of soldiers. Guan Yu, Lü Bu, and Zhao Yun look like the novel and popular imagery. The weapons and combos are game design.
The series is easy to confuse with the same company’s strategy games, Romance of the Three Kingdoms (三国志). That is a different line: a strategy game, not a musou. This site marks Dynasty Warriors as romance because the relationships follow the novel. One rider against a thousand is the game’s rule. It is neither Chen Shou’s order of battle nor Luo Guanzhong’s chapter.
