Records of the Three Kingdoms
Neither Chen Shou’s Records nor Pei Songzhi’s notes give Meng Huo a wife named Zhurong, or a woman of Nanzhong who breaks a line with flying knives. Zhurong is, in older myth, a name of the fire spirit, not a person of the Three Kingdoms.
This section can only say that she is not in the histories. The historical campaign is in Zhuge Liang’s biography: the army went south in 225 and the region was settled by autumn.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel, after Meng Huo has been captured several times, his wife Lady Zhurong rides out. She uses flying knives, takes Shu officers, and is later caught herself by a feigned retreat. Meng Huo comes to rescue her and falls into Zhuge Liang’s arrangement with her.
She is a woman warrior the novel adds so that the seven captures are not only the same man tied up again. The knives and the divine name Zhurong are the storyteller’s design.
