Records of the Three Kingdoms
Bu Zhi, courtesy name Zishan, was from Huaiyin in Linhuai. During the late Han troubles he and Wei Jing grew melons to live on, then crossed the river to Sun Quan. He was sent to Jiaozhou, where he gathered local men and steadied Wu’s claim on the far south.
In the middle years of Wu he served on the western flank of Jing Province alongside Lu Xun. After Lu Xun died, Sun Quan made Bu Zhi chancellor. He died of illness in 247. The biography says he was mild and did not forget people who had helped him when he was poor. No reliable birth year is recorded, so none is given here.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Bu Zhi barely appears in the novel, sometimes only as a name in a list of ministers. The melons, the chancellorship, and Jiaozhou never become a chapter. A reader who knows only the Romance can easily miss that Wu had this chancellor at all.
